Math Coach or Math Tutor?

Coaching: The Wood Educational Services Difference

We all know about tutors. They’ve been around about as long as education. But since the beginning, tutors have set out to help students solve short-term problems.

- Help with homework

- Passing a test

- Passing a class, or grade

Rarely is a tutor deeply invested in the long-term student relationship, or a student’s life long learning success.

You see, tutors create DEPENDENCY.

In the classroom, it’s called teacher/learner dependency. Any new challenge becomes a call to the teacher for help. Learning becomes REACTIVE and there is little, if any, room to end this cycle.

Unfortunately, the larger corporate tutoring companies have no real incentive to change the status quo.

It was in this environment that COACHING evolved.

Coaching: What learners need.

Education Coaching was developed by professional teachers to meet the growing real world needs of students. Without getting into the ”why”, let’s suffice it to say, students aren’t getting the right kind of personal attention. Each of us learns in different ways, and both the teacher and student need time to discover what works best in order to be successful.

A struggling student is a lot like an athlete with untapped talent.

Coaches motivate a growth mindset and guide them to their full potential.

A coach teaches the fundamentals, mentors and oversees development to the next level, and guides the strategy for the Big Game! When done well, the athlete learns lessons that will serve them the rest of their lives. Your big game might be passing a grade, moving from an average student to an “A” student, graduating high school, mastering the SAT, or getting into a good college. A coach can be a key part of winning the game.

Here are my goals as a Coach:

• First, I’m confident every student can learn math (and I’m ready to prove it).

• I create inspired learners.

• I train students how to “win” on their own.

• I create lifelong learners, who are confident in their abilities, and can go on to life long academic success.

Any challenge becomes an opportunity!

A math coach is never a quick fix solution. Instead, they offer a long-term mentor relationship that assumes responsibility for success.
