Ms Wood
Hello, students and parents, my name is Ellen Wood and I’m dedicated to cultivating great math students - particularly those struggling with the subject or who believe math is not for them. My strengths lie in inspiring independent learners by teaching concepts and making connections for a full and complete understanding of math. I firmly believe ANYONE can be a successful math student if gaps are filled and a student practices with purpose. The “I can’t do this.” mindset can be transformed to “I know I can do anything I set my mind to!” It is my greatest joy to assist students in making this life-changing shift.
Before becoming a math coach, I taught for almost 34 years with a large variety of curriculum in many diverse (cultural and socioeconomic) environments. I taught math in public and private schools, Department of Defense Schools, home schooled my own son from 8th through 12th grade, and even set up a cottage home school in my home for three years. Most recently, I instructed in two Denver alternative schools where the focus is on mentoring students in danger of not achieving a high school diploma.
Per the federal requirements of the NCLB Act of 2001, which include passing the Secondary Mathematics Praxis exam, I’m considered a HIGHLY QUALIFIED teacher. In my career, I’ve been certified in 3 states and currently hold a professional teaching license in the State of Colorado where I’ve taught Pre-Algebra, Algebras I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, Financial Algebra and Probability/Statistics.
“On the block” I’m known as the self-motivated teacher who is deeply and personally committed to my students’ success. I take great pride in the work and progress of every single student and look forward to putting my experience to work toward your next great educational accomplishment.
Ellen Wood is a master math instructor, curriculum writer, and mom. She’s based in Denver, Colorado.
